Position under active recruitment: Research and development on environment and socioeconomic nexus forecasting technology
Creating a world in which the natural environment, economy, and society coexist and prosper through digital twins
Aiming to create a world of co-existence and co-prosperity, we are promoting research and development on a "digital twin" that includes the natural environment, economic activities, and social activities as well as new indicators to evaluate these R&D activities.
What are the key points about environment and socioeconomic nexus forecasting technology?
Our goal is to create a digital twin of the real world where the natural environment, economy, and society are interrelated.
■By linking various simulators developed by experts in the natural environment and economics, we can more precisely reproduce complex systems and events and predict how economic and social decisions will affect the future of the natural environment. We will also work on automated and efficient processing technologies necessary for collaboration among models from different fields.
■Comprehensively understanding the natural environment, economy, and society, we will apply an index to our predictive assessments that comprehensively evaluate the richness of nature, people, and things in terms of not only economic wealth but also the richness of the natural environment and resources as well as human health and education. The effects of changes in economic and social activities in a particular region on the natural environment will be evaluated with the new index in a manner that allows us to present better decision-making options.
1Research and development on coupled-simulation technology
Details of work
Depending on your experience and abilities, you will be in charge of one or more of the following.
(1) Coupled simulation: Linking simulators in different fields (such as environment and economy) to manage large-scale time series data, build infrastructure for collaboration and analysis, and study methods for collaborative processing, analysis related to earth science and economic activities, and social implementation.
(2) Automation and optimization: To enable models with different data formats and throughputs to be linked, study methods for automation and optimization using machine-learning technology, etc., conduct demonstration tests, and implement the methods.
Required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience
Graduate degree from a science-related department (science, engineering, etc.) or equivalent knowledge
Experience with computer simulators in any field
Sufficient English skills to research and write papers in English
Desirable knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience
Research experience (either macroscopic or microscopic) centered on the analysis and evaluation of phenomena that can be considered part of the Earth system (including human activities)
Experience in verification using large-scale computer simulators in natural and integrated environments
Basic knowledge and implementation experience of machine learning and deep learning
Basic knowledge of programming languages such as Python and Fortran, implementation experience, and verification experience
Qualities we are looking for
People who can set challenges proactively, search for solutions, and establish technologies without being bound by existing frameworks
People who can promote research while seeking collaboration both inside and outside the company in order to achieve their goals
People who can proactively communicate with team members with diverse values and people from various academic fields
2Research and development on model-adaptation technology for new sustainability indicators
Details of work
Depending on your experience and abilities, you will be in charge of one or more of the following.
(1) Investigate adapting new indicators to existing models: Investigating indicators that comprehensively evaluate the richness of nature, people, and things (including the richness of the natural environment, resources, and society) and apply them to evaluation methods.
(2) Study new models in specific regions: Build simulators in specific regions and industrial sectors to which new indicators are applied, manage and analyze time-series data, and study methods for adapting and implementing new indicators in society.
Required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience
Graduate degree from a science-related faculty (science, engineering, etc.) or equivalent knowledge

Established in July 2020, the NTT Space Environment and Energy Research Laboratory is a totally new laboratory that conducts research on a broad scale encompassing outer space and the Earth. We are looking for talented individuals with vision and the passion to take on new challenges as a team member.
We are currently exploring unknown domains, so if you are someone who would like to grow with us, we look forward to hearing from you.
Toward sustainable prosperity between economic activities and the global environment
As abnormal weather and environmental destruction around the world makes headlines every day, we face the urgent need to change the direction of human activities in consideration of their impact on the global environment. Focusing on economic activities that have the greatest impact among human activities, the NTT Group conducts research and development with the aim of contributing to the creation of a truly sustainable global environment and human society. Long-term forecasting that takes into account the complex interplay between human activities and the global environment is an extremely difficult challenge; regardless, we hope to create technologies that will contribute to a world in which human society and the global environment can coexist and prosper. So if you are interested in global environmental issues and social challenges, let's take on these challenges together.
