講演概要

$\pi =3.1415926\dots$ is a bestselling mathematical constant of all the time. For centuries scientists have kept their interest in computing the number as far as possible. In the 1910s, well before computers and AI, the Indian prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan found a remarkable list of formulae for $1/\pi$, which could be used to compute the quantity to several thousand places.
They are still in use for this purpose, and they have many other applications and connect - in beautiful ways - with several other topics in mathematics, mathematical physics, and computer science.
The last few decades have witnessed an exploding development of new methods and generalizations of Ramanujan's formulae. In my lecture, I will survey the story of $1/\pi$, discuss its deep connections with analysis, combinatorics, geometry, differential equations, and number theory.
