量子光学の基礎研究

量子光学の基礎研究において長年世界の最先端を切り開いてきた研究者である。彼の主たる研究業績には、ポンプ雑音を抑圧した半導体レーザによる非古典光(サブポアソン光)生成の提案とその実証、光子数の量子非破壊測定の提案とその光ソリトン衝突による実現、励起子ポラリトンのボーズアインシュタイン凝縮の予言とその実現、単一光子‐電子量子もつれ状態(エンタングルメント)生成の提案とその量子ドットを用いた実現、などが挙げられる。これらの基礎研究の成果は、その後大きな研究分野へと成長し、今日量子光学という基礎科学分野の主要テーマに発展している。山本氏の活動は、基礎研究にとどまることなく、その成果を実用技術として社会実装することにも熱心に取り組んできた。その方面での主たる研究業績は、① 単一光子数状態の発生とこれを用いた量子通信技術の開発、② 光スクイーズ状態の発生とこれを用いた量子コンピュータ技術の開発、の2つである。

山本喜久氏は、量子光学の基礎研究において長年世界の最先端を切り開いてきた研究者である。彼の主たる研究業績には、ポンプ雑音を抑圧した半導体レーザによる非古典光(サブポアソン光)生成の提案とその実証、光子数の量子非破壊測定の提案とその光ソリトン衝突による実現、励起子ポラリトンのボーズアインシュタイン凝縮の予言とその実現、単一光子‐電子量子もつれ状態(エンタングルメント)生成の提案とその量子ドットを用いた実現、などが挙げられる。これらの基礎研究の成果は、その後大きな研究分野へと成長し、今日量子光学という基礎科学分野の主要テーマに発展している。山本氏の活動は、基礎研究にとどまることなく、その成果を実用技術として社会実装することにも熱心に取り組んできた。その方面での主たる研究業績は、① 単一光子数状態の発生とこれを用いた量子通信技術の開発、② 光スクイーズ状態の発生とこれを用いた量子コンピュータ技術の開発、の2つである。

まず第1の業績の背景から説明する。インターネットの普及に伴い、通信路上での個人情報や機密情報のセキュリティ確保が喫緊の課題となっている。現在、インターネットのセキュリティ確保に用いられている現代暗号は盗聴者が解読に用いるコンピュータの計算能力を基準にして、その安全性が設計されている。そのため、将来のコンピュータ性能の向上と共に常に改訂や変更を行なっていく必要があるばかりではなく、現在は安全な暗号通信を行なったと思っていても、将来にはその内容が解読されてしまう危険性をはらんでいる。一方、量子暗号は量子力学の不確定性原理により、その絶対安全性が保証されているため、いかなるコンピュータ技術が将来登場しても、改訂・変更をする必要がない点に特長がある。山本氏は、量子暗号の代表的プロトコルであるBB84方式を実現するために必要な単一光子数状態を、半導体マイクロキャビティに埋め込んだ半導体量子ドットを使って発生することに世界に先駆けて成功した(論文1)。太陽光や通常のレーザ光では、各パルスに含まれる光子数にはポアソン分布に従うゆらぎが存在するが、単一光子数状態では各パルスに必ず光子が一つだけ存在する。このため、盗聴が原理的に不可能なのである。山本氏は、開発した単一光子光源を用いて世界初の単一光子量子暗号通信にも成功した(論文2)。また、BB84方式に代わるより実用的な量子暗号プロトコル(Differential Phase Shift: DPS方式)を提案し、世界最速・最長の量子暗号通信の実証実験に成功した(論文3)。この新方式の優位性は、2010年10月総務省・NICTにより実施され、世界中の主要研究開発グループが参加した東京QKDネットワーク・プラットフォームの構築にあたって、90kmという最長区間を担当したNTTにより本方式が採用されたことからも裏付けられた。量子暗号は2ユーザ間(1対1)でセキュア通信を行なう技術であるが、これを多ユーザが参加するセキュアネットワークへと拡張する通信技術は量子中継と呼ばれる。量子中継においては、量子メモリ間にもつれ状態(エンタングルメント)と呼ばれる非局在量子相関を形成する必要がある。山本氏は、原理的に識別できない単一光子数状態を発生する半導体量子ドットを新たに開発し(論文4)、これに電子スピンを一つだけトラップし、外部からの光パルスで、この電子スピンを制御する量子メモリを開発して、この量子中継技術実現への道を切り開いた(論文5)。この方式は、固体素子を用いた量子中継技術の中で最も高い性能(フィデリティ)を示し、その後世界中の多くの研究グループで開発が進められている。

次に山本氏の第2の業績の背景について説明する。現代コンピュータではNビットの自由度がある問題においては、全部で2N個ある解の候補に対して総当り計算を逐次行なって最適解を探している。N=10の場合であれば、解の候補はたかだか1000通りであるが、N=20, 30, 40, 50と自由度が増えると、解の候補は100万、10億、1兆、1000兆と指数発散する。これが、いわゆる計算量爆発である。現代社会において、我々が直面している組合せ最適化問題は自由度(ビット数)Nが1,000個以上の大規模なものであるので、現代コンピュータに代わる新技術は重要な社会的課題の解決に資するものである。一方、量子コンピュータでは、量子力学の重ね合わせ原理で動作するN個の量子ビットを用いることにより、2N個の解の全候補を同時に入力することができるので、たった1回の計算で答えを得る可能性がある。しかし、量子ビットは外部からのノイズに弱く、短時間で量子コヒーレンスを失ってしまう。このデコヒーレンスを抑圧し安定な量子計算を、量子誤り訂正の導入だけで実現しようとすると、膨大な計算リソース(量子ビット数、計算時間)を消費しなければならないことが、過去20年にわたる研究からわかってきた。山本氏は、このような反省から単一光子や単一電子からなる量子ビットを用いる量子コンピュータ方式に代わり、多数の光子からなる光スクイーズ状態と呼ばれる非古典光を量子ビットの代わりに用いる新しい量子コンピュータの原理を提案した(論文6)。光スクイーズ状態とは、多数の光子が一種のボーズアインシュタイン凝縮を起こし、ノイズ耐性を獲得し安定な位相を実現しつつも、量子力学の重ね合わせ原理も合わせて実現している光の状態である。山本氏は、まず1987年に半導体レーザを用いて世界に先駆けて光スクイーズ状態の発生に成功した(論文7)。その後、1995年には今回用いた周期分極反転LiNbO3導波路(PPLN)を用いた光パルススクイーズ状態の発生にも成功した。開発した新しい量子コンピュータ(コヒーレント・イジングマシンと呼ばれる)では、このPPLN導波路で発生された光スクイーズ状態が量子ビットとして使われている。さらに、光スクイーズ状態を無雑音で測定するコヒーレント光検波技術(論文8)と量子測定フィードバック制御(論文9)という2つの光技術も合わせて使われている。これらの量子光技術は、いずれも過去35年にわたり山本氏が提案・開発してきた技術である。山本氏は、N=4パルス、16パルス、100パルスのコヒーレント・イジングマシンを次々に開発した後、現在ではN=10,000の光スクイーズ状態パルスを一つの光学系に集積化し、組合せ最適化問題の一つであるイジングモデルを高速で解くことに成功している(論文10)。この原理に基づく2048ビット全結合コヒーレント・イジングマシンをNTT研究所で開発している。これは現存する世界最大規模の量子コンピュータとなり、現代コンピュータと比較して高速計算を実現することが期待される。
