About Us

Introduction

The Space Environment and Energy Laboratories are working to create next-generation energy technologies such as nuclear fusion and space solar power systems, as well as technologies that will enable resilient environmental adaptation, in order to realize zero environmental impact, which is the NTT Group’s environmental and energy vision.

In order to proactively respond to crises such as pandemics and catastrophic disasters caused by increasingly extreme climate conditions, it is necessary to create dynamic innovations in the fields of environment and energy, from the perspective of the space environment including the earth.

To do this, we will regenerate the global environment and realize a sustainable and inclusive society by realizing and utilizing next-generation overwhelmingly clean energy, sustainable technology including CO2 conversion (Negative Emissions Technologies), and innovation from the perspective of proactive ESG management and environmental adaptation.

The Space Environment and Energy Laboratories is a new research institute established on July 1, 2020 with the purpose of creating innovative technologies for the regeneration of the global environment and the realization of a sustainable and inclusive society. While this is the first NTT laboratory to have the word “space” in its name, its purpose is not to conduct research on space itself, but rather to take a new look at the earth from the “space environment” including the solar system, and engage in research on the regeneration of the global environment and environmental adaptation from a dynamic perspective.

With regard to next-generation energy, in order to contribute to zero environmental impact, we will research nuclear fusion, space solar power systems, hybrid AC/DC microgrids, CO2 conversion technology (Negative Emissions Technologies including developing artificial photosynthesis), and other such technologies. With regard to environmental adaptation, we will research ESG Management Science for analyzing and predicting environmental, social, and management problems, as well as advanced disaster prediction technology and environmental adaptation technology (weather control, lightning induction, and lightning charging) by wide-area IoT sensing using artificial satellites.
This research institute will take on challenging new themes unlike any before, so it requires researchers from a wide variety of fields. For this reason, I intend to not only recruit both new graduates and mid-career professionals, but also actively promote collaboration with outside researchers, including joint research with related research institutes.
