The development and spread of information and communication technology (ICT) is progressing rapidly in the twenty-first century, and it is transforming our daily lives in major ways. While we benefit from the convenience that ICT brings, it is also true that we are awash in information, which confuses us regarding the actions we should take. As we face these bewildering, changing times, we must constantly re-examine the contents and strategies of basic research itself, so as to avoid stumbling into evolutionary ‘dead-ends’ of technology.

  At NTT Communication Science Laboratories, we are engaged in basic research that combines both information science and human science on two fronts. The first is the basic science that defines the era. We are leading the world in laying the groundwork for a new age as we steadily cultivate technologies and knowledge that promise to bloom in five to ten years. Our basic research also seeks to meet the demands of this age. We are using the technologies and knowledge we have cultivated to address the social challenges facing us today.

  At Open House 2014, we at NTT Communication Science Laboratories will introduce the fruits of our labor. Even as these fruits ripen, they already contain seeds of innovation for the future of information technology.
