Optical Interconnect Device Project

In order to realize the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) concept and the future of low-power, high-quality, and high-speed communications, we are engaged in research and development of device technologies centered on optical semiconductors.

① Photonic-Electronic Convergence (PEC) devices

There is a strong demand from the fields of networks and computing for optical technologies with higher data-transmission speeds and reduced power consumption. We are working on the Photonic-Electronic Convergence (PEC) devices for highly efficient optical interconnections. We aim to realize PEC devices through the development of design and manufacturing technologies for electronic chips and optical semiconductor chips, as well as optical connection and mounting technologies. One of our key technologies is membrane devices, which are optical semiconductors capable of high-speed and extremely low-power operation.

② Optical Semiconductor Devices

Optical wavelength control of all photonics networks (APNs) is an important aspect of the IOWN concept. The ability to control the optical wavelength is also important in applications other than communications, such as in optical sensing for environmental monitoring. As a light source for IOWN-APN, we are working on an electro-optically reflection-type transversal filter (RTF) laser that can efficiently control the output wavelength. We are also developing a light source (SSG-DBR laser) that can control wavelengths of light suitable for monitoring environmentally harmful gases.

・ Semiconductor LD for gas sensing

The 2-μm DBR laser measures multiple absorption lines of CO2. It simultaneously provides information on gas concentration, temperature, and pressure. Its high-speed sweep reveals details of explosions and combustion phenomena. It is effective for analyzing combustion phenomena in engines and boilers.
