Introduction

NTT Technology Innovation Center (TIC) was newly established in July 2026 with the mission of formulating development and deployment strategies based on a backcasting approach from market needs and societal demands, and leading the social implementation of cutting-edge technologies from an R&D perspective.

Amid rapid technological innovation, TIC seeks to identify the true needs of the market and accelerate co-creation with external partners across diverse industry sectors to realize a smart society that achieves both sustainable growth and solutions to social challenges. We are also committed to driving the development of solutions based on technologies with broad cross-industry applicability, as well as deploying high-value AI models through domain-specific model development and advanced tuning techniques. Furthermore, by placing open innovation at the core of our activities, we will collaborate with diverse communities and contribute to open-source software (OSS) initiatives, leading global value creation and innovation.

NTT Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is dedicated to advancing the social implementation of cutting-edge technologies from an R&D perspective, leveraging IOWN technologies centered on optical innovation as well as AI technologies represented by NTT’s generative AI model, tsuzumi.

The pace of technological innovation has become unprecedented in recent years. New technologies continue to emerge at a remarkable rate, transforming the way we live and conduct business. To keep pace with this rapid change, it is essential to closely monitor global trends and continuously incorporate the latest technologies into our activities. In particular, we believe it is vital to accurately understand market dynamics and develop the ability to identify technologies with true potential among the many innovations appearing every day. By constantly updating our own expertise and capabilities, we strive to contribute to the realization of a smart world that achieves both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

In the industry sectors that we strategically target, we work closely with a wide range of external partners to address pressing challenges and create new value. In addition, for technologies expected to have broad applicability across industries—such as advanced wireless communications and technologies that enable secure and efficient data exchange—we conduct evaluations and validation activities with agility and accelerate their integration into practical solutions. Among these initiatives, AI plays a particularly important role. By incorporating industry-specific knowledge, designing optimal technical architectures, and continuously enhancing models through tuning and refinement, we aim to develop high-value AI solutions that deliver meaningful benefits across diverse industries.

Innovative technologies cannot always be realized by a single organization alone. Recognizing this, we place strong emphasis on open innovation, actively contributing to diverse technical communities while promoting open-source software (OSS) development. Our organization includes core contributors to globally recognized OSS projects. As a member of TIC, “OSS Center” serves as a team of leading engineers that supports and advances OSS utilization across the NTT Group.

TIC also collaborates closely with the three Technology Centers for Computing, Network, and Device within the NTT IOWN Integrated Innovation Center. Together, we aim to continuously drive innovation from a technology perspective. By embracing change in both society and technology, and by empowering each researcher to establish full-stack solutions, we will continue to take on the challenge of creating new value and solving societal issues.
